Here is the mixed media wall art that I made for my daughter and son in-law for Christmas.
This is the first time that I ever painted anything quite like this. I am really proud how it turned out.
I wanted to keep it myself. But my daughter said no its hers I would just have to make another.
I took a ton of pictures, inside and out, but none of them do it justice. The colors just are quite right.
I will walk you through the steps I took to make this mixed media painting.
I cut a few pages from a book, and one from some sheet music. I found the wooden words at Joann's, and the cross at Hobby Lobby.
First I decided where I wanted everything to go on the canvas. I used mod podge to glue my pages pieces down, then traced off where my cross would be.
Next I drew in the block areas for the words, and the larger color blocks.
I then paint the areas where the words would be placed with antique white.
You can't really see this in my pictures, but each block was first textured with a heavy coat of gesso before I added the colors. A different texture for each block, so they all look different.
Before the gesso dried in the block with the cross I scratched in "together, love, faith, family, hope". These will show up after the wash is applied.
Next I painted in the base color of the cross with antique gold.
I next used a light wash of each of these colors to paint in each textured block. Two blocks Old ivy, True burgundy, Antique gold, Burnt sienna, and Terra cotta.
Hand painted "Make all things possible", then I started stippling burnt umber over the antique gold on the cross, to give it a leathery look.
Next I used a few leaves, and painted the undersides with hunter green, then pressed down on canvas to add a few leaf imprints.
Then came a very light wash of espresso over the whole canvas, to tone down the colors and give the painting an aged look.
Work one section at a time, so you can pat some off before it dried.
Once dry I went back and floated around every colored block, edges of canvas, and around the page pieces.
Once everything was dried, I added a coat of Mod Podge over the whole canvas.
I glued down the words, and cross with gorilla glue.
All done! Now I see why mixed media art cost so much. This painting took me a day and a half to complete.
But I was so happy how it turned out (the whole time worrying that it wouldn't). I wanted to keep it myself.
My husband said, now your going to have to make us one :-D
I sure wish my pictures had turned out better. But cameras and I just don't get along. Never have )-:
