Hi All! Today I am going to share a fun project my “Upcycled Wood Frame & Spindle” that I turned into some pretty home decor. The wood spindle was left over from the spindle ladder afghan rack that I made a while back. The ladder was just a little too long so I cut off just one section that had one spindle connected to the side rails. Didn’t want to throw it away, kept thinking I could use it as a handle on a wood box or something. Then I came up with the idea of hanging a thrift store frame from it to make some pretty decor for the home.

Upcycled Wood Frame & Spindle
For this project, I started out by making a stand to hold the wooden picture frame.
All I did was cut a 1 by 4 just a little wider than my spindle with the side rails.
Marked it’s place then pre-drilled the holes and had the hubby help hold it in place while I screwed in the wood screws.
Next, I gave the stand a coat of white chalk paint slapping it on here, and there leaving some of the natural wood showing through.
While that was drying I went to work on the thrifted frame taking it apart. Cleaning the glass then giving it three coats of chalkboard paint. My plan was to use as a chalkboard to leave cute quotes for guest in the guest room but decided afterward to just stencil something permanent on it.
Once dry I stenciled “Bless This Happy Home” on it.
Now back to the stand. Since the spindle and side rails are aged and the base is not I decided to go back over everything with some watered down burnt umber and wiping it off immediately so not to soak into the chalk paint too much. This way it aged the whole piece where the new wood blends in with the aged wood.

Connecting the Upcycled Spindle & Frame Together
Holding the frame up to the spindle I marked off where the mini eyehooks needed to be placed. Both on the spindle and the wood frame. Then I screwed the eyehooks in place.
Liking the way the frame looked I didn’t do anything to it except to clean it up.
Laying the stand on its side with the frame beside it I connected the loose ends of the chain to the two eye hooks on the spindle to the two eye hooks on the frame.
Time to put the glass back into the frame backing an all so the glass would be secure and not jiggle around.
For a little bit of bling, I glued two glass pull knobs on top of each side rail.
Voila, my upcycled wood frame & spindle make for some pretty home decor that can stand freely on a mantle, dresser, or wherever I choose to put it.
