How to Make a Pencil Jar Tissue Holder

Hi All! This week I would like to share a fun project that would make a great gift for a Teacher. My pencil jar tissue holder. Wouldn’t that look so cute sitting up on the teacher’s desk, right along with my pencil jar pencil holder.

Supplies Needed

Tall large mouth glass jar (pickle jar)
Acrylic paints – Golden Sunset, Ceinture (pink), Metallic, Antique White, Black
White chalk paint
Mod Podge
Antiquing medium Nutmeg
Xacto knife
Kleenex tube canister
Black felt with one side sticky
Scissors
Mason jar lid that fits the pickle jar
Paint brushes
Sandpaper
Black spray paint

Diy Pencil Jar Tissue Holder

Start off by washing the jar in hot soapy water and drying.

For this next step you can either paint your jar with white chalk paint for a base coat (here’s a homemade chalk paint recipe), or if you are just going to use acrylics wipe down the outside of your jar with alcohol. This removes any oils and help’s the paint to adhere to the glass better.

My jar already had a base coat of white chalk paint from a previous project started but never completed.

Next, I started from the bottom of the jar adding the pink for the eraser, two coats.

Then I moved up to the middle part of the pencil painting it with Golden Sunset, giving it two coats as well. Sitting the glass jar upside down till dry.

Once dry I went back and added Metallic right above the eraser. This will be the metal band that holds the eraser onto a pencil.

After that I went up to the top using the Antique white. That is the part that shows after you sharpen your pencil, before the lead.

These colors aren’t quite true to colors of a real pencil, but I just used what I had on hand.

I freehanded NO.2 on the side of the glass pencil jar tissue holder.

After the pencil jar was completely dry I took it to the garage and distressed it with some sandpaper. Then wiped the dust off.

Since the colors were a little bright for my taste I decided to use some antiquing medium to tone them down, and because I love the stuff.

Now for a coat of Mod Podge to seal and protect. While the Mod Podge is drying I take the lid rim out to the garage and spray painted it black.

For the lid insert I cut out a round piece of felt (that has a sticky side) using a round mason jar lid rim insert for the size.

Then I remove the top of the round Kleenex canister, and removing the paper from the sticky side of the felt. I then place that down in the top of the tissue insert where the tissues come out.

Once the felt is stuck onto the Kleenex insert I flipped it over and using the xacto knife to cut the same X slits in the felt.

Once done I removed the insert from the plastic rim and placed it in the newly painted black lid rim with the solid black felt showing through the top of the lid.

Adding the round canister of tissues into the pencil jar, pulling a Kleenex through the opening, and screw the jar lid down onto the jar.

There you have it, a Pencil Jar tissue holder that’s as cute as can be and would make an awesome gift for a favorite teacher.
