Commenting in your own niche is important because:
By commenting on other blogs in your own niche, you will get your name out there, promote your own blog, therefore increasing your visibility.
Leaving blog comments on a regular basis, will increase the amount of traffic coming to your blog from others that have the same interest, and is a great way to build relationships with other blog owners; they in turn will visit your blog.
Not only will commenting on other blogs in your niche bring you targeted traffic but you will be building backlinks to your own blog. This is a very effective method that will help you with your search engine rankings.
How to Leave Great Comments
First of all "read the whole post", don't leave a comment just for the sake of gaining a backlink. Leave comments that are a few sentences or longer, not single line comments like "Great post", "Thanks for sharing", etc. Leave meaningful comments that are relevant to the topic of the post, try to share some valuable information when leaving your comments. This will help build your reputation.
Whatever you do avoid leaving rude, harsh, or insulting words; these kinds of comments will only hurt your reputation in the long run.
Like your mother has always said; If you don't have anything nice to say then just don't say anything at all.
Why Aren't I Getting Any Comments?
Some of the reason’s that you may not be getting any comments on your blog, may be because of a low amount of traffic/visitors, your blog post have no value, your not posting regularly and interacting with your blog commenters, your commenting system is not user friendly, and poor SEO (search engine optimization).
To increase your traffic start off by making sure your commenting system is user friendly. If your commenting system makes it difficult for a user to leave a comment, they will just click out and go elsewhere. Work on your blog post to give your readers something of value, use keywords that are relevant to the post, and post on a regular basis.

By posting valuable information regularly you should start to see an increased amount of traffic coming to you site, and by using keywords that are relevant to your post will help others find the information that you offer through search results, therefore bring you targeted traffic.
