Do you ever have a project that calls for aged wood but don’t have any on hand?
Well I found a recipe to take new wood and make it look old and weathered. I kind of came on this by accident.
I found a recipe online that uses vinegar and steel wool. So I tried it, but it wasn’t dark enough for me. So I though since I use coffee or tea to age paper and fabric just maybe that would work.
It worked great! I love the color and how well it worked. It takes a few days to make so make some up in advance.
Take a glass jar and fill 3/4 full of vinegar, then drop a piece of steel wool into the jar and screw the lid on. For 3-4 days shake the jar.
On the fourth day add some coffee, shake to mix. I added about a tablespoon. You might want to add less and work up to the color you desire.
Just apply with a paint brush and store with lid on. I’ve had mine for about a month now, I’ve even added a little more vinegar to the mix, and it still works great.
Non weathered cedar fence slate.
Weathered fence slate. I love how it turned out. Now when I need weathered wood and don’t have any I just bring out my jar and age my own.
