When making a necklace there are a few thing you might want to take into consideration, before deciding on the length for your necklace. Although there are standard length’s for necklaces, depending on the weight of the beads, or pendant you will be using. The style could be altered dramatically.
Necklaces that have heavier beads or pendants on the front will form more of a V-shape and hang somewhat lower then lighter pieces will. Therefore a necklace made with heavier beads or pendant may need to be shorter in length.
Standard Sizes for Necklaces
Women
Chocker style Necklace – Worn at the throat. Average size is about 15 inches with closure.
Princess Style Necklaces – Reaches the collarbone. Average length 17 to 18 inches, includes the closure.
Matinee Style Necklaces – Below the collarbone, range from 20 to 24 inches in length, includes closure.
Opera Style Necklace – Rangers from 28 to 30 inches in length can be made with or without closure.
Lariat or Rope Style Necklaces – Are 45 inches or longer in length. No closure is necessary. Can be worn as single strand or wrap around.
Men
Base of Neck – 18 inches
Most Common for Average collarbone length.
Below Collarbone – 22 inches
Above the sternum – 24 inches
Child
Standard Size Necklaces – 14 to 16 inches in length.
