While in the process of remodeling our kitchen I decided to make a rustic wood shelf to go above the kitchen window.
I made my rustic wood shelf out of cedar fence pickets, and stained with my magic wood aging solution.
To make my shelf I used 3 Cedar fence pickets, two 6″ wide and one 4″ wide, and some scrap wood that hubby had left over when reframing a door.
I had to use two different sizes of pickets so that my rustic wood shelf would fit in the space provided between the cabinets and above the kitchen window.

I first cut each of my cedar fence pickets to 62″ in length.
Then using my scrap wood (affiliate) I cut four pieces 14 1/2″ in length.
Pre-drilled 6 holes in each piece.
To hold my wood fence pickets together I laid them out side by side. Then placing one of my scrap pieces 1″ from the end I used wood glue (Affiliate) and screws to fasten the one side down.
Then adding another piece of scrap wood 1″ from the other end I fastened it down as well.
For the last two pieces of scrap wood I placed the first one appropriately 22″ from the end then added some glue (Affiliate) and screwed it down.
The last pieces of scrap wood I did the same placing it appropriately 22″ from the other end, then fastened it down with glue and screws. (Affiliate)
Once together I proceeded staining my rustic wood shelf (Affiliate) with my magic wood aging solution.
I let it dry throughly then hung my rustic shelf using L brackets (Affiliate) in the middle for support, and small L like brackets on each end that was already there from a previous shelf the owner before us had up.
Now I have a place to display part of my farm animals and vintage can collection.
How do you like my easy peasy rustic (Affiliate) wood shelf? Don’t look at my ceiling we haven’t textured it yet since scraping popcorn off.
