We seen a Texas sign similar to this one at the antique/craft mall and thought that it would go really good in our Texas room on the bar area.
We had everything we needed at home so the hubby took on this project himself.
How to make a Texas Sign Using License Plates And Cedar Pickets
Materials needed:
- 2 license plates
- 2 cedar pickets
- Stencils
- Jig saw
- Sander
- Stain
- Tin snips
- Miter saw or can use jig saw
- Tape measure
- Triangle square
- Pencil
- Paintbrush and clean rag
- Upholstery tacks
First off cut each picket approximately 10″ in length. Then cut the angle at the top of the other three pickets to match the other two.
Line your pickets side by side and position your stencils.
And pencil in your letters, than cut out using your jig saw. Give each picket a quick sanding just to knock off any rough edges.

Using tin snips cut your license plates a little larger than the letter openings.
Center your license plate panels than tack down in place with upholstery tacks.
You can either hang each picket individually, or connect them together with a piece of tin by screwing onto the back of each picket with small screws.
I think the hubby did a great job making his Texas sign from old license plates and cedar pickets. What do you think?

This is cute! I use my license plates for birdhouse but this I may do for the garden.

I would like to have a birdhouse with a license plate roof. One of these days I will get around to making one, first I got to get a hold of some more license plates.

That’s awesome! My husband made me a bird house using a license plate as a roof. I love it! Your husband is quite talented, but you don’t have to tell him if it will cause a “swelled head.” Ha!

Thank you Carol! I will have to give the credit to this one to the hubby! I think I’m giving him the creative bug.

This would be cute for any state, although the longer-named states would be a bigger pain. I love what your husband did. Thanks for sharing this craft at the Over the Moon Link Party.
Linda @ Mixed Kreations says
Thank you Sandy! Yes this sign would be cute done up in any state. I thought that it would have taken longer to make but the hubby made it pretty quick. But a longer state would take longer. Thanks for stopping by!

I just found your blog today after Sadie Seasongood’s link to the chandelier bulb carrots (totally adorable, btw!). As a Texan, I was delighted to find a series of Texas crafts 🙂 I love this use of the cedar pickets … I’m thinking of doing my favorite saying from Friday Night Lights: ‘Texas Forever’ and use up a good chunk of my Texas license plate stash. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Hi Patty! I am happy to meet a fellow Texan, glad that you hopped on over and liked the light bulb carrots and found my Texas projects. I think that the idea for a Texas Forever sign made from old license plates would be really cool. Don’t forget to share and tag me, would love to see it. Thanks so much for stopping by!
