Hi All! I’ve been having fun with the faux galvanized metal technique. Like I used on the two-tier faux galvanized tray, Dollar Store bin makeover, and the faux galvanized metal letters. So much fun that I am using it in my repurposed cutting board décor – Valentine’s day project. I will be using the technique on a cardboard heart, and I must say it came out fabulous!

Diy Repurposed Cutting Board Décor
Started off by giving the cutting board a quick sanding. Just to knock down the raised design and rough it up some.
Then I gave it two coats of red chalk paint. Once dry I sanded the edges to give them a distressed look.
For the heart, I cut it out of cardboard, then carefully peeled the top layer of cardboard off one side.
Exposing the corrugated cardboard in the middle.
Once the layer is removed, I gave the heart a coat of black paint.
Next came the stippling of colors with an old paint brush.
First came the dolphin grey, then dark grey, next white. Letting each coat dry thoroughly.
To finish up the faux galvanized look on the heart I used metallic and an old paint brush. Stippled it all over the heart letting the other colors show through, which gives the heart a resemblance of galvanized metal.
Now back to the cutting board I cut out a piece of paper and wrote Love on it, then transferred it onto the cutting board with carbon paper. Using a small detailed paint brush and white paint I went over the carbon transfer.
Putting it All Together
Next, I cut off enough twine to go around the repurposed cutting board four times.
Stapling one end of the twine to the back and placing the faux galvanized heart on the front and start wrapping gently but tightly to hold the heart in place using the grooves to help hold it in position. Attaching the key in one of the wraps.
Once it’s wrapped and snug in place, I flipped it over and stapled the other end of twine in place. Being careful not to crush the heart.
Add another piece of twine to the handle for hanging and that’s it! How do you like my faux galvanized heart? Isn’t it fabulous with the slightly uneven edges it looks like I cut the heart out myself from corrugated metal? Adding the white in with the other colors I think made a difference in the technique as well.
I’m very pleased with how my repurposed cutting board décor turned out.

I would never in a million years have guessed that the heart was cardboard. It looks just like you cut it from a piece of metal. I am so using your tutorial to make a fairy home that someone has asked us to do for them. It’s brilliant Linda
