I have been wanting to make my own faux Zinnias out of pine cones since I have seen them on Pinterest. So while visiting my daughter last month I was able to gather some pine cones for my Zinnia project with the help of my granddaughter and grandson.
How To Make Faux Zinnias From Pine Cones
A while back I ran across some faux Zinnias on Pinterest, I believe the pine cones were dipped in different colors of paint, but I decided to take the easy way out and just spray paint the pine cones. I have plenty of spray paint that I’ve had leftover from previous projects.
I placed 6 pine cones on a piece of card board and starting painting them with some orange spray paint.

I continued spray painting the pine cones 5 to 6 at a time with different colors of spray paint until I got all my pine cones painted.
Dipping them in paint would have gave them a better covering of paint. But for me spraying painting was quicker and easier, and who doesn’t like quick and easy.
Next I used some yellow acrylic paint and added a little yellow center to each of my faux zinnias.
I love all the different colors.

I had this box that I picked up at Goodwill so for now that’s what I have them in. I may paint the box later and keep them in there or find something else to put them in.
I think my faux zinnias turned out pretty cute! What do you think? Should I keep them in the box and just paint it?

Those are adorable. I would put stems on them to display them in an old bottle, maybe? I think definitely paint the box.

I love this idea!
I’m forever picking up pine cones that fall into our yard from the tree next door (because our puppy eats them and then gets sick). Next time I do that I’m going to give this a try!
Linda @ Mixed Kreations says
You should Kathleen! There so easy and so cute, plus it will save your puppy from getting sick.

Adorable! And I can think of a dozen ways to use them – on a wreath, in a bouquet, stacked in a glass vase….
Linda @ Mixed Kreations says
I love the idea of using on a wreath!

What a clever idea! I love it when an item can be repurposed into something else. I like the contrast the box adds as is 🙂
Linda @ Mixed Kreations says
Thank you Erin! I like the box too, the hubby us saying I should get a glass jar or wood bowl. But until I find something better it will stay in the box.

I’ve been painting pinecones all winter but by hand. I cut them in half then pick e shades of a color a base color , one lighter, one darker. Making highlights and darker spots. Its fun making them look like flowers. It takes longer but I like. I’m going to put on a grapevine wreath I had. I cut the pine cones in half with clippers I got on Amazon. Funny how crafters think of same crafts but different ways. My art room has so many projects going plus the grandkids art area is always a distraction when they come I give them a version of mine. They helped making the tablecloth wreaths the wreaths came out beautifully! Happy Crafting!

Hi Tina! Oh that is going to be so pretty. Would love to see your wreath once you are finished. My craft room is a mess because I have so many things started, plus I keep getting more. LOL
I wish that my grandkids lived closer, the younger ones would have so much fun crafting with grandma. 😉 Happy Crafting!
